The holy prophet Elijah, who by flying on the chariot of fire had shown his power over the elements, was considered the patron saint of atmospheric agents in Russia.
Most of Elijah’s icons come from the Novgorod region, and the predilection for depicting the saint on the chariot of fire was in common with the cult of the pagan deity Perun, abolished by Prince Vladimir of Kiev but remained alive in popular legends.
The icon represents the four best known moments of the prophet’s life: the crow bringing him food in the desert, the comfort of the angel, the crossing of the Jordan river in company with Elisha, and the ascension into the heavens on the chariot of fire.
