First edition of Malesherbes’s memoirs.
Following the edict of 1787, the condition of Protestants improved: they were allowed civil marriage, and were allowed to have the birth of their children recorded, either by declaration before a judge, or through baptism. But practicing their religion remained forbidden. To this period of liberalization, succeeding persecution and preceding the Revolution, historians have given the name “Second Desert.”
