Antoine Furetière - Dictionnaire Universel contenant généralement Tous Les Mots François tant vieux que modernes... - 1690

Doe een bod

First edition of this important encyclopaedic dictionary, which notably inspired the Académie Française and Diderot d'Alembert.

Published after the pioneering works by Jean Nicot and César-Pierre Richelet, the "Dictionnaire universel" is one of the first major monolingual French dictionaries. Although he was primarily interested in describing concepts and things, his book is nonetheless a dictionary that provides a description of, and thus 'standardises', the French language. A record for the time, there were no less than 40,000 entries. Because of the wealth of its contents, as evidenced by its long title and the diversity of the topics covered, this work can be considered the very first draft of the Encyclopaedia.
